Build an Ugly Mug with Berea Pottery!

Explore your creative side and personalize your own ceramic mug by making it “ugly”! A couple of ears, eyes, a nose or two and you’ll be well on your way to making an “ugly” mug. Christmas is right around the corner and handmade one-of-a-kind mugs make perfect gifts should you want to give it away.

You’ll choose from a selection of pre-thrown vessels. We will go over some guidelines so that you create a well-built ugly mug and then you’ll be shown how to use the provided clay and tools before getting started. If you ever get stuck or have questions we will be available to help. You’ll customize the mug and then we will fire and glaze it. Pickup times for the finished mugs are Dec 11th from 3-4pm and Dec 12th from 1-2pm.

Pricing and Participation Details
$50 per mug for non-members
$40 per mug for Berea Makerspace members
1 additional mug is $30 for non-members, $25 for members. Max of 2 mugs per person per session.
Children 3 and under may attend with family members and can play with clay that we will provide. Registration is not required for children 3 and under and they may participate for free.

Because this is an indoor group event, masks will be required for participants.
Be prepared to get a little dirty, clay does wash out easily, but we still recommend wearing casual clothes.

More Event Information
We will ask you if you would like a handle and if so we will add one to a location of your choosing. Before you leave we will look over your creation to make sure it will survive the glazing and firing process. Once it is approved we will let it dry before having it go through the 1st firing. After that first firing we will glaze and 2nd fire your mug to 2,200 degrees F in an electric kiln. Your mug will come out food and dishwasher safe.

If you are unable to complete the mug before the end of the time it will be fired as-is or you may opt to bring it home to finish but it must be finished and delivered to us on or before Nov. 14th. If you finish at home we will not be able to add a handle for you and we will not guarantee the mug with a consolation mug.

Pickup times are Dec 11th from 3-4pm and Dec 12th from 1-2pm. If you are unable to make either time work please contact us and we will figure out a solution.

Should your mug have any issues during the firing and glazing process we will notify you and since we can’t guarantee your custom-made mug, to ease the loss, we may offer to let you pick out a consolation mug.
