Dedication of Memorial Markers at Berea Cemetery

May 29, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

FREE

Civil War Veterans to be remembered… You and your guests are invited… Memorial markers will be unveiled in recognition of the sixty-five Civil War Veterans at rest in the Berea Cemetery. Many were members of the Grand Army of the Republic, Capt. James C. West Post #171. The Woman’s Relief Corps #48, an affiliated organization, will be recognized for their benevolent service to Berea and its veteran families. Descendants of Pvt. Horace Yates, U.S.C.T., will place a memorial wreath in remembrance of the thirteen African Americans who served in the U.S. Colored Troops and now rest in the Berea Cemetery.

WHY… Twenty-five years after the Civil War and through the efforts of many veterans, an integrated post of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was mustered at Berea. The Capt. James West Post, #171, was a fraternal organization of Union veterans. Its rituals and remembrances would engage the entire community in patriotic celebrations of Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day. As the years passed, so did the veterans. Although the post was active for thirty-nine years, few today are aware of its existence, an incredible part of Berea’s early history. Their stories are often forgotten and seldom told.

Join us as we celebrate with a casual evening of history, music, and exhibitions. Every veteran deserves to be remembered.
