The Janis Ian Archives Breaking Silence Celebration Weekend

October 18

I am now officially excited about this. Not only because of the private screening of the upcoming documentary about my life and work. Not only because some of my oldest and dearest friends will be there. Not only because it’s a chance to expose people to the wonderful work Berea College is doing. but because it’s a chance for me to go into a room full of the history of my family, my people, my tribes, my friends and colleagues, and enjoy it as an outsider looking in. I hope if you can’t come to this, you will be able to stop by there someday in the future. And make sure to check out the Spotify curated list. I have to admit that as a songwriter I am conflicted about using it, but as a listener I’m really glad this is available.
In honor of The Janis Ian Archives opening in 2024, Berea College is hosting a weekend-long event from October 17-20, 2024, that mirrors the archive tour experience, bringing in musical artists and famous friends for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration! 🎉🎶
Join multiple GRAMMY Award-winner, Janis Ian, for unforgettable activities including: guided tours of the Janis Ian Archives; carillon concert of Janis Ian’s music, a theatrical production of Mama’s Boy, one of Ian’s mother’s early plays; masterclasses with acclaimed poet, Jane Hirshfield, and celebrated photographer, Peter Cunningham; and a private screening of the new, yet-to-be-released Janis Ian documentary followed by a conversation with Janis and the film’s director, Varda Bar-Kar.
The weekend culminates with the Janis Ian Tribute Concert in Phelps Stokes Chapel featuring performances from acclaimed singer/songwriters Amythyst Kiah, Aoife Scott, Melissa Carper, S.G. Goodman, Berea College alumna Senora May, and the Berea College Music Department. The evening’s emcee will be Silas House, Poet Laureate of Kentucky and Berea College professor. This weekend experience is not to be missed!
