Cross Tuning Your Fiddle - Begins July 31st from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM - Price: $144
Workshop Instructor: John Harrod

This class will explore tunes in AEAE cross tuning as used by fiddlers Luther Strong, Bill Stepp, John Salyer, Alva Greene, Clyde Davenport, J. P. Fraley, and Buddy Thomas. This tuning with its drones and open bass notes allows for stronger accents and volume and was often used by fiddlers who had to play solo for a dance. The class will proceed at an intermediate level.

Please bring a fiddle and bow that are in good, playable condition as well as an electronic tuner, a recording device and some extra strings. All Singing Bird Music School learnshops will focus on learning music “by ear” (the listen and repeat method). It is not necessary for students to know how to read music before they attend the school. Instructors may provide some chord charts, song lyrics, etc. but the reading of formal musical notation will not be taught. Students who have registered for any intermediate / advanced level learnshop will have the option to switch learnshops if they choose in the afternoon learnshop period on Thursday, August 1st and all day on Friday, August 2nd. This is to accommodate musicians who play multiple instruments or want to explore different Singing Bird Music School learnshops. This option is only available for those musicians who register for intermediate / advanced level learnshops.

Prerequisites: This learnshop is accessible to anyone with a few years of experience who can play at an intermediate level. Students should know how to play several tunes from memory.
