Beginning Bluegrass Banjo - Begins July 31st from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM - Price: $144

This learnshop is open to beginners. No previous experience with a banjo is required. All techniques will be taught step-by-step.
Participants will learn in this beginning bluegrass banjo learnshop:
• How to tune the banjo.
• Ho to use basic bluegrass banjo “rolls” to accompany familiar songs.
• How to play the banjo when jamming and playing with other musicians.
• Techniques to help make practice at home most effective.

Please bring a five-string banjo that is in good, playable condition as well as a thumb pick and two metal finger picks (these items will not be provided). All Singing Bird Music School learnshops will focus on learning music “by ear” (the listen and repeat method). It is not necessary for students to know how to read music before they attend the school. Instructors may provide some chord charts, song lyrics, etc. but the reading of formal musical notation will not be taught.

• Location: Russel Acton Folk Center – 212 West Jefferson Street (All registered Singing Bird Music School participants will check in and gather at this location at 9:00 AM each morning. All registered Singing Bird Music School participants will leave from this location to their learnshop location. All locations are within walking distance.)

• Date/Time: July 31st, August 1st AND 2nd from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM (2:15 PM - 9:00 PM are optional activities.)

• Break: 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM (45 minutes) (Note: Lunch is provided and will be served at the Russel Acton Folk Center – 212 West Jefferson Street.)

• Total Hours: 16.5 hours of instruction (See complete schedule at link above.)

• Age: 10 & Up (Youth 10 – 18 MUST bring a Youth Authorization Form, completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian, found at this Attendees Resources link.)

• Take Home: How to tune the banjo, use basic bluegrass banjo “rolls” to accompany familiar songs, play the banjo when jamming and playing with other musicians and techniques to help make practice at home most effective.

• Notes: Participants MUST bring their own five-string banjo that is in good, playable condition as well as a thumb pick and two metal finger picks (these items will not be provided). Participants that have food allergies MUST email details to info@visitberea.com.

• NOTE TO EDUCATORS: Educators attending this session will receive access to on-line cross-curricular resources, suggested classroom activities based on skills and concepts covered in session, and a certificate of participation for Professional Learning documentation.
