An introduction to small-scale beekeeping using the top-bar hive. We will cover basic honey bee biology, the structure of a top bar hive, obtaining and installing bees for your hive, and the basics of hive care for each of the four seasons. Pests and diseases, city codes and regulations for urban beekeepers, and harvest and use of honey and wax will be discussed. Weather permitting, we will “suit up” and open a hive for close inspection (bee suit or veil will be provided for use). Light snacks will be provided.

• Take Home: A book on top-bar beekeeping; handouts including information on sources of bees and information on sources of beekeeping equipment, and additional information.

• Notes: In the event of rain or other bad weather, we will not be able to open a hive, but will rely on slides and other materials to illustrate the workshop. If we can open a hive, participants should wear long pants and socks into which the pant legs can be tucked, closed toed shoes, and a light-colored shirt. Participants who may be allergic to bee stings are responsible for bringing their own epi-pen or other appropriate medicines.
