SUMMARY:Woodworking FUNdamentals with Katie Bister
DESCRIPTION:In this two-day class we will explore the basics of machine and hand tool woodworking through three simple\, functional\, and engaging projects. Each student will make a serving/cutting board\, a decorative bowl\, and a spoon which will introduce them to basic milling\, turning\, and knife work. \nThis class is perfect for beginners looking to dip their toes into woodworking and find their favorite way to work with wood. Whether you are looking to work with machines like jointers\, planers\, table saws\, and lathes or if splitting and carving with gouges and a slöjd knife are more your style\, we will do it all and more in this class! \nCutting/Serving Board\nFor this project we will go over selecting and milling wood for a glue-up. We will go over the safe use of chop saws\, jointers\, planers\, and table saws. We will touch on wood movement and grain direction as we prepare for glueing up our boards. Once the glue has dried\, we will go over getting our boards to finished dimensions before shaping\, sanding\, and finishing them. \nDecorative Bowl\nFor this project students will be introduced to bowl turning. We will start with the preparation of the bowl blank and how to attach it to the headstock of the lathe using a lead screw in a chuck. Then students will be shown how to use a bowl gouge to create the silhouette and foot profile for the outside of their bowl. We will go over sanding and finishing before removing the bowl from the lead screw and fitting the chuck into the foot of the bowl to turn the inside of the dish. Once the bowl has been shaped\, we will sand and paint\, if desired\, before finishing it. \nSimple Spoon\nFor the spoon carving part of this class\, we will go over the splitting of green wood from a log and then start with shaping our blanks with our desired silhouettes. We will go over the use of a drawknife and shavehorse to remove excess material from our spoon blanks before using gouges and hook knives to hollow out the bowl of the spoon. Lastly\, we will go over the use of a slöjd knife to smooth the surface and finish shaping the spoons. \nAll the tools and materials will be provided for this class.\nAll material costs and daily lunches are included in the course fee at Pine Croft.

DESCRIPTION:Our Traditional Craft classes continue in April! These pay-what-you-can (even if that’s $0) events help continue traditional craft education here in Berea. Come spend time with local artists as you learn hand tool woodworking or blacksmithing. Signups are through the ticket links on our Facebook events\, or through our calendar at www.bereamakerspace.org/calendar \n\nOn the weekend of April 19th\, we have Build the Trug with Don!\n\n\nDon Weber leads the weekend workshop. We’ll be building a Trug! Learn about green woodworking and steam bending.\n\n\nDon Weber\, the Bodger of Paint Lick\, is a traditional woodworker\, furniture and fly-rod maker. We’ve been lucky to have him leading workshops for the past three years through our traditional craft program. Do not miss this opportunity! Minimum age: 16 (adult must be present for minors).

Want to learn about the local wildlife?\nThen join at group hike at the Pinnacles in Berea!\n***\nEvery Saturday at 10:00am this summer\, FOC staff and Berea College students will be ready to hike with you! The group that attends will decide on the destination together. We can also split groups (if there is ample staffing) if there are different wants/needs of hike difficulty.\nPlease bring water and any medications you might need (i.e. inhaler). Dress for the weather.\n*The hike will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather including thunderstorms or high winds*\nGroup hikes are offered year round. DESCRIPTION:The Berea College planetarium hosts shows twice a week in our large planetarium. The shows are open to the public and held every Friday at 7PM and Sunday at 4PM. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. You can check out https://planetarium.berea.edu to view the available shows and descriptions. \nLocated in the Margaret A. Cargill (MAC) Natural Sciences and Health Building (34) on the 4th floor. Visitors can enter using the two doors located at the front of the building.
