SUMMARY:Willow Bark Basketry with Jennifer Zurick
DESCRIPTION:This class will introduce weavers to native black willow bark\, a very strong\, flexible and beautiful fiber uncommonly used for basketry. Class participants will learn fiber preparation by removing the outer bark layer from portions of precut strips prior to constructing a small basket and bark harvesting will be discussed. Students are encouraged to create freely\, choosing from variety of weaving techniques for the basket body and twining techniques for border design options. Cordage making for optional handle application will also be taught. All skill levels are welcome. \nAll material costs and daily lunches are included in the course fee at Pine Croft.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special presentation honoring the life and work of Kentucky folk artist\, writer\, farmer\, and stone mason Herbert Lee Clark (1934–2017). \nLou DeLuca\, longtime friend and editor of Clark’s writings\, will share a 30–40 minute PowerPoint presentation exploring: \n-Clark’s book Old Time Kentucky Farmsteading\, Ways and Means (Acclaim Press)\n-His wit and wisdom\, gathered from the traditions of his elders\n-Examples of his remarkable stone masonry and folk architecture\n-Stories from their decades-long friendship in Harrisonville\, KY \nIllustrations in Clark’s book are by Joanne K. Guilfoil\, artist and former UK/EKU professor\, adding another layer of artistry to his legacy. \nThis event is both a tribute and a glimpse into Kentucky’s farming and folk traditions through the eyes of someone who lived them fully.
